Nil geometry explained!
Просмотров 66 тыс.2 года назад
Just as you wanted, here we try to explain the mysterious Nil geometry! Nil is one of the eight Thurston geometries. Thurston geometries are used to classify three-dimensional manifolds. Nil is anisotropic, which means that the directions are not equivalent: the "up/down" direction acts differently than north/east/south/west directions. Presented by Tehora Rogue. Higher-Dimensional Spaces using Hyperbolic Geometry
Просмотров 11 тыс.2 года назад
A novel method of interactive visualization of higher-dimensional grids, based on hyperbolic geometry. In our approach, visualized objects are adjacent on the screen if and only if they are in adjacent cells of the grid. Semi-Euclidean Portals

Non-Euclidean geometry AND portals!
Просмотров 14 тыс.2 года назад
This video combines earlier videos related to both non-Euclidean geometry and portals. While gamers often call portals "non-Euclidean geometry", non-Euclidean geometry is more about parallel lines diverging, rectangles not existing, triangles summing up not to 180, things like that. All this causes the perspective to work weirdly, and other cool effects that could not be achieved with portals. ...

0:00 a confusing maze It appears that we have a triangle of solid walls in front of us. Let's try to walk around it. Surprisingly, this "triangle" has seven sides! What's going on? 0:15 hyperbolic geometry This maze is actually based on hyperbolic geometry. The hyperbolic plane can be tessellated with triangles, so that 7 triangles meet in every vertex. We place solid walls on some of these tri...
14400-sided die
Просмотров 6 тыс.2 года назад
We can subdivide every face of a dodecahedron into 10 triangles, making a 120-sided fair die (The Dice Lab sells dice like this). Here, every 3-dimensional face of the 120-cell is subdivided into 120 tetrahedra, as explained above. Thus, we obtain a four-dimensional 14400-sided die. The boundary (3-dimensional surface) is three-dimensional, so we can have the "inner view" of the die. Here the i...

the video was truly inspiring, thank you !!
Ya best start believing in non-euclidian worlds, lass, cause yar in one!
I wonder what S*E*H would look like, with 1 spherical dimension, 1 Hyperbolic, and 1 Euclidean. Would really like to see that!
Geometry specifies how two dimensions interact. so S1, E1 and H1 is the same thing. And x means that the dimension between components do not interact (i.e., in Euclidean way), so you just get Euclidean space.
zeno, can you read my other suggestion comment?
Which one? (try joining the HyperRogue Discord server, that is better for conversation)
zeno, noneuclidean portals demo restricts me to the current geometry
In what way?
@@ZenoRogue its teleporting me back to the current geometry, when i go thru a portal it flips me and teleports me back to current geometry, example: if i want to go from H3 to H2 Bring, it will flip me 180 degrees and teleport me back to H3
@@ZenoRogue second notification incase you accidentally close first one :D
zeno, im lagging a lot in rogueviz demos, how do i stop the lag?
You mean low framerate? * Some demos are just slow (the videos are not rendered in real time) * either for a good reason (generally, rendering non-Euclidean geometries is sometimes very hard computationally) or because they have not been optimized well * if you have bad hardware (CPU/GPU), they might work better on good hardware * it is often possible to reduce the quality -- which improves the framerate but has its costs (for example by reducing the rendering range by pressing '1' 'r' )
@@ZenoRogue also in the non euclidean portal collection its restricting me to the current geometry, how do i disable it?
please make an horosphere explroring thingy i love being mindbent
That is not a very specific description...
If you get to the end you find Cthulhu.
note that at 2:20 there is a inversion pattern where z (the complex plane) is z^-1.
great video (the noise is killing my ears)
so can you make an sandbox that lets you modify the geometry like in the video? like this gui _______________________________________ | X multiplier : 0.5 +------- 1 | | Y multiplier : 0.5 +------- 1 | | Fold Y? : [ON] - [OFF] | | Fold X? : [ON] - [OFF] | | _Custom X/Y formula? : [ON] - [OFF] _| because im curious if i can make spherical geometry and more :D and the custom x/y formula would change the x/y multiplier 2 an formula input that would have a default euclidean formula and u can modify it with variables NORTH, SOUTH, EAST, WEST, UP, DOWN and start = (x,y,z) example is (x,y - north*z)
The problem is that (in the current implementation) modifying the geometry this way needs recomputing some stuff, which takes some time.

I accidentally discovered something like this when playing with Hypermine! This game could be configured to not use air resistance in its physics. If the player will jump from a tower or a hill too tall while air resistance is disabled - while falling the player may miss the ground and start to perpetually fly in some sort of an orbit "around" the ground, despite the fact that this ground is actually flat! Well, mostly flat - it has hills and stuff. Weirdly, when left flying this way, the player will slowly raise both its "apoapsis" and its "periapsis" if these words are even suitable here, I guess they raise because of slight imperfections of gravity calculations that result in slow accumulation of speed by the player
🤍
non-euclidean geometry is literally math on drugs

VERY COOL GAME!!! With each new discovery, the unknown becomes more and more!! So many locations and different mechanics...
So, in String Theory, all those different curled up dimensions? These are them. 😊
I am wondering how the game engine is storing the coordinates and rendering these. ray tracing magic? And how would gravity work ?
This is what it feels like to walk around in a city you've never been to before
I’d like to see a similar video covering some of the other Thurston geometries, specifically Solv and the other one with a weird name; most of them (the X^3 and X^2xE) are pretty straightforward expansions of 2D spherical/hyperbolic geometries, but I don’t understand those two.
Our video "Non-Euclidean third dimension" includes a similar explanation of Solv. The one with the weird name is also called twisted H2xR, while Nil is twisted E2xR -- just take Nil as explained here and replace the NESW plane with the hyperbolic plane. But there is more to say about it (like, why that weird name), so we will likely make a video about it at some point.
@@ZenoRogue Thanks; that helps some. I’ll check that one out and look for the other if it comes out.

Interesting that even when you exit Euclidean space, the floor is tiled with four squares to a vertex (which would not be true if you were in elliptic/hyperbolic space), gives some incite into how this was rendered/coded.
